The BIRTHDAY BOOK IS DONE!!!

At long last I am actually writing this post. I have dreamed about this for almost as many years as I have been authoring this blog. It is with great satisfaction I can finally say–and mean it–The birthday book is done!

I have told my husband and the kids so many times “the birthday book is done” that it started to loose meaning. Draft after draft, after frustrating small-tweaks-here-and-there draft, it is really truly completely, no-more-to-do done. I invite you to to pop some champagne for me… no not really, I can do that myself, but geez luize, it is good to put this one on the shelf and say fini!

It was a project my good friend Robin and I started back when the kids were little. We traveled through so many stages of our lives and I have lived in five houses since we started. I guess I like to move! Or it has just taken a long time and finding the place that is home takes a long time too.
But anyway, enough about that, here are some of my favorite images from the book:

Filled to the brim with step-by-step instructions for making original gifts, favors, cakes, wrapping, decorations and games, BIRTHDAYS: HANDMADE, HOMEMADE is interwoven with stories, photographs, illustrations and anecdotes. We invite readers to pull up a chair, pour a cup of tea and spend the afternoon making and creating. Our goal is to offer inspiration on how to make a birthday handmade, homemade and your very own.
Readers will love the creative ideas that make this book so personal and tangible. Projects range from fast and easy . . . Dinosaurs in real eggshells, to more timely and in depth . . . Dining table forts. Young parents and do-it-yourself enthusiasts will find endless help onhow to prepare and execute a homemade birthday party.
At a time when it seems like families are trying to take back just a bit of their own and blogs hum with self-reliant know-how, this book is a great jumping-off point for those aiming to leave commercialism behind and bring it all back to the ones they love.
Birthdays: Handmade, Homemade is available online.

Nimble Fingers…

Not too long ago, one of our lovely little ladies in this group of
sweet children reached the ripe and exciting age of seven…
In preparation for a party that all these young ones were soon to be attending, they worked
quickly and nimbly to create a small presentable pile of gifts to show our truly deep
appreciation for her presence in our world…
 Using needle and thread…
Paper and pen…
Hot glue and wool roving…
Their complete focus on making something for their close companion was so very inspiring to me…
Now let us let December begin ~ Marica

Pickles and Chutney…

I love making chutney. I love the spicy-sweet and the constant tasting to make sure the
flavors are balancing just right… The oh so ripe peaches simmering and simmering…
I love the jars on the counter…
Now on to pickles.  I love how summertime is pickle time… recipe…
This year I tried making spicy pickles too… Mmm the ones that were a tad sweet
were far better than the ones with no sugar at all. I am seeing a theme here…
Now the final stage… It all fit just perfectly in a basket for my dad’s birthday…
Happy Birthday Pops!!!
And Happy August to everyone ~ Marica

It’s been nine years . . .

Since this sweet little baby was born . . .
This fast growing, happy weed of a girl . . .
Who makes me feel so connected to my own time of being a child . . .
Happy nine times around the sun . . .
And all that it brings . . .
  Happy birthday . . .
 And . . .
 I love you!!!

                                                                         Cheers ~ Marica

And now he is twelve…

Well, they grow ~ which is what we want… It really is!!!
But often I wish I could just freeze time and have them babies forever…
This kid is now twelve… The little guy who used to wake up before the sun and walk
down to the coffee shop with me. This little person who used to be so friendly everyone
in our town knew him, even if we didn’t know them…
And I love who he is now… I wasn’t sure what to give a twelve year old that would have any
worth while impact… And then it hit me, a stone sanding wheel so he can make swords and daggers…
He was very excited… He is so involved in fantastical creatures, Lord of the Rings books, comics and stories. He makes things and always seems to have a a world he is creating…

I am so very honored to be a part of that world…
Happy Birthday big-twelve-year old!!!!

This Sunday . . .

I made two kinds of cake . . .
Gluten and dairy free coconut lemon . . .
As well as I managed to covered my kitchen in a hurricane of coconut . . .
To make this a raw coconut cake for a baby shower . . .
I finished and gave a not yet born baby a hat, so so small . . .
And a woolen soaker . . .
I adore knitting for babies . . .
I noticed huge changes on the lilac bush out front of our house . . .
And I watched this eight-year-old girl, sitting on a table being eight-years-old
like there never was an eight-year-old before . . .
Happy Sunday to you all  ~ Marica

Colors of my mom’s birthday . . .

Today was my mothers birthday. A lovely short bit of time together and a simple gift.

I found these two beautiful fabrics that seemed like a glove-fit for her sofa . . .
She is a true pillow lover, so it was a fun quick project to stitch these up and seal
their fate as colors bound by thread.
My daughter made her this adorable card . . . My mother also loves frogs . . .
We took a quick trip to Santa Barbara for lunch . . . Just the two of us . . .
And found a bounty of beautiful color.
She even remarked on how the day felt so full of color . . . I agreed . . .
A perfect time together . . .
Happy Birthday to my Dear Mother ~
